The “Global Youth Link ? Meet Suzhou” series of events kicked off at the Museum of Embroidery Art of Yao Jianping in SIP on Apr 12, aimed at enhancing the ties between Chinese and foreign young people and offering overseas students and other expatriates in SIP opportunities to gain a good knowledge of the local culture.
The events are sponsored by Suzhou Youth Federation and SIP Foreign Affairs Office, and organized by the Communist Youth League SIP Working Committee and Suzhou Industrial Park One-stop Service Centre for Expats.
In the first event, Chen Tao, chief marketing officer of Suzhou Yao Jianping Embroidery Art Co Ltd, gave the participating young people a talk on the history and value of Suzhou-style embroidery and the application of traditional embroidery concepts and techniques in modern designs.
The participants also tried to embroider a pattern for a cup mat in person, which enhanced their understanding of Suzhou-style embroidery.
In other events of this series, the participants will have chances to experience fan making, nut carving, jade carving and other traditional handicrafts.
