Over the past three decades, SIP has not only composed an epic about fast economic growth, but also drawn a vivid picture of ecological civilization.
By implementing the “river (lake) chief” mechanism, under which “river (lake) chiefs” are appointed to carry out regular patrols and other actions for water management, SIP has managed to keep a good water environment.
The quality of all the water in two drinking water sources reached the set standard, so did the quality of water covered by the provincial water quality monitoring network. Blue-green algae are under effective control, and a network of 74 “Happy Rivers and Lakes” has been formed.
Moreover, with a scientific and efficient water resource management system, SIP has greatly improved its water consumption efficiency, ranking first in Suzhou and among the best nationwide with a water consumption of 5.33 cubic meters per 10,000 yuan of GDP.
Concurrently, SIP has seen great improvement in biological diversity. In May, Little Curlew (Numenius minutus), a bird under level-2 protection in the country, was first found in Suzhou Dushu Lake Sci-Edu Innovation District. SIP’s third-round biodiversity survey recorded 1,688 species between 2022 and 2023, including 230 newly found ones.
At the same time, SIP has made excellent performance in improving air quality, soil environment, acoustic environment and natural ecology.
Now SIP is sparing no effort to promote ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) practices across it. It has attracted over 300 businesses engaged in related sector, and strives to join the efforts of all authorities, businesses, social organizations and residents to maintain a good environment.
